Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago – Building Media Visibility

In 2009 Tricom Chicago was hired by Neighborhood Housing (NHS) of Chicago, one of the country’s leading nonprofits providing housing and community development opportunities through affordable lending, real estate development, practical green building and foreclosure prevention.

NHS of Chicago turned to Tricom Chicago to generate media attention around its annual awards dinner and fundraiser, an event that typically gets little to 

no media coverage. Tricom put together a strategy to engage Chicago-area media, including targeted community publications. With keynote speaker FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair as our media hook, we generated coverage from several Chicago TV and radio stations. At the event, we also made NHS spokespeople available to announce a major partnership with the city and an important event for Chicago homeowners – NHS of Chicago’s “Fix Your Mortgage” workshop. A customized press release promoting NHS’s neighborhood office leadership award winners was developed and pitched to community media, generating more coverage than NHS has generated in previous years.  Tricom Chicago continued media outreach to promote Fix Your Mortgage, an event to roll out President Obama’s Making Home Affordable Plan in Chicago, in partnership with the City of Chicago Department of Community Development, the Office of Mayor Richard M. Daley, the U.S. Department of Treasury, NHS of Chicago and several other nonprofit organizations. Tricom Chicago handled logistics, marketing, grassroots outreach, volunteer coordination and technology support, along with media relations.

Our PR strategy netted NHS of Chicago morning show interviews on every television network affiliate in Chicago, with many requesting multiple interviews prior to, during and after the event. We generated record turnout for the workshop and helped NHS register thousands of Chicago homeowners for the Making Home Affordable Plan.
