Importance of Reading

An undergraduate student once expressed her objective of pursuing an education degree:

“I want to provide a child with the reading experience that I did not receive during my educational career. I want to teach them how to read at the age seven, not seventeen.”

This individual has the passion and personal experience needed to educate the next American generation. It is notable to recognize that reading is an essential skill in the classroom.

Reading can be defined as the oral interpretation of written language.

Why does anyone need to read? It is a matter of educational achievement and societal survival. Reading allows individuals to immerse themselves in knowledge about the world. We need to use the basic skill to maneuver throughout our daily lives.

However, how much does dyslexia impact success in the classroom and society?

Dyslexia is sometimes known as a reading disorder where individuals have trouble despite normal intelligence. Neuroscience research has provided a biological and genetic explanation for dyslexic behavior, and there is research being conducted to further understand how the wiring of someone with dyslexia is disrupted.

Research today has led to early intervention and specific reading techniques for individuals. Reading needs to continue to be addressed as a top classroom priority. Dyslexic students are more likely to drop out of school than their non-dyslexic peers.

Dyslexic students’ true intelligence should never be measured solely by their reading ability. Every individual deserves the opportunity to receive an education where reading opens the door to possibilities. Words have the power to impact the way we view the world. The more we read, the better students and leaders we become.

Let’s make the world a better to live and grow, one reader at a time.
