Washington State Governor Issues Moratorium on Death Penaty

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee announced a moratorium on the death penalty in Washington State. He released a statement on Tuesday, Feb. 11 cautioning, “if a death penalty case comes to my desk for action, I will issue a reprieve.”

Inslee’s decision was influenced by three factors: few criminals sentenced to the death penalty are put to death, prosecution costs for death penalty cases are greater than the costs associated with lifetime prison sentences and death sentences are “neither swift nor certain.”

Although he is not attempting policy reform, Inslee hopes his decision will spark a discussion about the disadvantages of the death penalty. Those currently on death row in Washington will remain in prison for the remainder of Inslee’s term.
